Regional Highlights

Rotorua, located in the Bay of Plenty region on New Zealand's North Island, is renowned for its geothermal activity, Māori culture, and natural beauty.

  • Geothermal Activity: Rotorua is famous for its geothermal features such as geysers, hot springs, and mud pools. Wai-O-Tapu Thermal Wonderland and Te Puia are popular spots to witness boiling mud pools, erupting geysers (like the Pohutu Geyser), and colourful mineral deposits.

  • Māori Culture: Rotorua is a significant center for Maori culture in New Zealand. Visitors can experience traditional Māori performances, cultural shows (like at Te Puia), and even visit living Māori villages to learn about their customs, art, and history.

  • Rotorua Museum: Housed in a stunning heritage building, the Rotorua Museum provides insights into the region's history, culture, and geology. It's temporarily closed for earthquake strengthening as of early 2022, so check for updates.

  • Adventure Activities: Rotorua is a hub for adventure enthusiasts with activities like ziplining, skydiving, whitewater rafting, and luging (a gravity-fuelled carting experience at Skyline Rotorua).

  • Wellness Experiences: spa experiences in Rotorua capitalise on the natural geothermal resources of the area, providing visitors with unique opportunities to relax and rejuvenate in mineral-rich waters and therapeutic muds. Whether you're looking for luxury spa treatments or a more traditional Māori healing experience, Rotorua has something to offer every spa enthusiast.

  • Redwoods Forest: Adjacent to the city, the Whakarewarewa Forest (also known as the Redwoods Forest) is famous for its towering Californian Coastal Redwoods and offers excellent walking, mountain biking, and horse riding trails.

  • Rotorua Lakes District: Beyond Lake Rotorua, the surrounding area is dotted with several other beautiful lakes such as Lake Tarawera, Lake Okareka, and Lake Rotoma, each offering its own unique attractions and activities.

Detailed Itinerary

DAY 1. AUCKLAND / ROTORUA

Board a midday flight to Rotorua, a city renowned for its rich Māori culture, world-class spa and wellness experiences, otherworldly geothermal landscapes, and incredible backyard of lush forests and sparkling lakes. Experience the warmth of te ao Māori and Manaakitanga, the Māori concept of hospitality and care for visitors. From the warm smiles of locals to the rich storytelling and cultural experiences, Rotorua creates a sense of belonging and connection.

Next to mystical Lake Rotorua and just a brief stroll from the city centre, Millennium Hotel Rotorua is an eco-friendly destination in New Zealand. Perhaps the most unique feature here is its heating, provided by harnessing the hotel’s natural geothermal resource.

Take a dip in the heated pool or relax under the expert hands of the therapists in The Spa Rotorua.

Early this evening, head up the Skyline Gondola for a relaxing glass of wine and a bite to eat, all while taking in the panoramic views over Lake Rotorua. Sample carefully crafted Volcanic Hills wines from New Zealand’s most recognised and respected wine regions, followed by some of New Zealand’s best award-winning cuisine.

Stay: Millennium Hotel Rotorua

DAY 2. ROTORUA / WELLNESS EXPERIENCE

Indulge in a world of relaxation and rejuvenation with a half-day experience at Wai Ariki Hot Springs and Spa. On the shores of Lake Rotorua discover the Wai Whakaora, a path to restoration, and the exclusive sanctuary, Āhuru Mōwai, both deeply rooted in Māori values.

This one hour massage, two hour bathing and spa essentials package helps to induce a calm balance between your mauri (vital energy) and your wairua (spirit). The signature oil blends, infused with rongoā (plant remedies) further enhance this restorative massage. Rest and find stillness in a unique mineral bathing experience that combines the geothermal mineral waters with the centuries-old legacy of Ngāti Whakaue culture, traditional practices and Manaakitanga (caring for people and community).

Stay: Millennium Hotel Rotorua

DAY 3. ROTORUA / DEPART

Refreshed and recharged, enjoy a relaxed morning at leisure before departing on flights homeward bound.

If you have time, we highly recommend the Te Rā guided experience at Te Puia. Come face-to-face with the biggest, naturally active geyser in the Southern Hemisphere Pōhutu Geyser, and enjoy the up-close experience with the New Zealand Kiwi.

Be mesmerized by exploding mud pools all throughout the valley and gaze at beautifully crafted Māori-made artwork and sculptures. Watch carvers and weavers demonstrate their skills at the New Zealand Māori Arts and Crafts Institute and hear Te Puia’s guides share stories passed down from their ancestors. Their wānanga (school) is a lighthouse for indigenous culture, worldwide.
